Prop. 420 Will Create Issues Scottsdale Does Not Need
October 22, 2018 by Dale Fingersh
Prop. 420 is rife with unintended consequences. That’s why the board of the Scottsdale Area Chamber of Commerce urges you to vote “no.”
The proposition is a blow to representative democracy. We elect a City Council to represent our interests, study issues and set policy for Scottsdale. If we don’t like their decisions, we can replace them at the ballot box.
But, Prop. 420 would create a change to the city’s Charter that would remove any say over the McDowell Sonoran Preserve from the council and give it to the unelected McDowell Sonoran Commission. This commission, none of whose names have appeared on a ballot, would have full authority over the Preserve. If the commission made a decision you didn’t like you’d have no recourse.
There are better ways to manage our preserve. Prop. 420 will create unintended consequences for our city and our future. The potential damage is too great. Vote no.
